There was no trading in the United States yesterday due to the Labor Day holiday, so the main US stock indices and Treasury yields showed no change. Consequently, the Chicago grain markets were also closed. Trading activity was concentrated in European and Asian markets, where the EuroStoxx 50 advanced 0.2% and the Nikkei 225 rose 2.1%.
On the macroeconomic front, the second-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data for the Eurozone and Japan were released. Eurozone GDP grew 0.6% quarter-on-quarter, above the 0.4% forecast by analysts and the 0.2% decline in the previous quarter; year-on-year growth was 0.5%, below the expected 1.0%, but higher than the previous 0.3%. In Japan, GDP expanded by 0.4% quarter-on-quarter, compared to the consensus estimate of 0.3% and the previous estimate of 0.5%. The annualized figure showed an increase of 1.4%, above the projected 1.1% but below the 1.8% of the previous quarter.
Finally, regarding commodities, oil closed the day higher: WTI rose 1.3% to $92.7 per barrel and Brent advanced 0.7% to $97.0 per barrel. Gold, meanwhile, fell 0.6% to $4,404.3 per ounce and silver declined 0.1% to $66.2 per ounce.
