The major U.S. stock indices closed mixed on Friday. Driven mainly by the technology sector, and in particular by the semiconductor industry (following Intel’s positive surprise), the S&P 500 rose +0.8%, while the Nasdaq gained +1.6%. The Dow Jones, meanwhile, fell by -0.2%. Thus, year-to-date, the indices have accumulated gains of +4.7%, +6.9%, and +2.4%, respectively.
Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields narrowed at the end of the week. The 1-year bond yield moved from 3.69% to 3.66%, while the 3-year bond yield moved from 3.85% to 3.80%, and the 10-year bond yield moved from 4.32% to 4.30%.
This week, the focus will be primarily on the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting and any comments that Jerome Powell, the Fed chair, may make during the press conference. The decision is expected to be to keep the interest rate in the current range of 3.50%–3.75%. Other central banks, such as the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, and the Central Bank of Brazil, will also hold their monetary policy meetings this week.
