The main US stock indexes closed in positive territory yesterday. The S&P 500 advanced 0.5%, bringing its year-to-date gain to 12.0%. The Nasdaq rose 0.5%, accumulating a 12.8% increase this year, while the Dow Jones gained 0.6%, with a cumulative increase of 10.4% through 2026.
Regarding bond yields, US Treasury rates declined across the entire curve yesterday. The 1-year Treasury yield fell from 4.15% to 4.14%, while the 3-year yield dropped from 4.46% to 4.43%. Similarly, the 10-year yield decreased from 4.80% to 4.78%.
Finally, regarding commodities, gold advanced 1.4% to USD 4,387.5 per ounce, while soybeans fell 0.4% to USD 478.3 per ton. Among energy products, WTI crude rose 0.5% to USD 90.7 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 0.6% to close at USD 95.3 per barrel.
As for economic indicators, the Japanese services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for August was released last night, coming in at 52.5 points, above the analysts' consensus of 52.3. This morning, the Eurozone and UK services PMIs for the same month were released: the Eurozone PMI came in at 51.6 points, slightly below the consensus of 51.7, while the UK PMI reached 52.5 points, below the consensus of 52.8. It's worth noting that a reading above 50 points indicates expansion in activity, while a reading below reflects contraction.
