The United States and Iran exchanged new attacks over the weekend, amid conflicting reports about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran engaged in a new escalation of attacks over the weekend and into the early hours of this morning, amid a series of exchanges that have deepened tensions between the two countries since the ceasefire agreement reached in June. The U.S. Central Command reported that its forces carried out a new round of attacks on dozens of targets in Iran, including air defense systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone capabilities, with the stated objective of limiting Iran's ability to threaten navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with attacks against U.S. bases and interests in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman. The two countries maintain conflicting accounts regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz: while Tehran has indicated that it will remain closed, Washington maintains that it remains open to navigation. Oil prices rose this morning, with Brent crude hovering around $79 a barrel.

Against this backdrop, major U.S. stock indices closed with moderate gains on Friday. The S&P 500 advanced 0.4%, the Nasdaq gained 0.3%, and the Dow Jones rose 0.3%. Year-to-date, the indexes have accumulated gains of 10.7%, 13.1%, and 9.5%, respectively.

Regarding bond yields, the U.S. Treasury yield curve showed slight increases on Friday. The 1-year Treasury note moved from 4.02% to 4.05%, while the 3-year Treasury note advanced from 4.21% to 4.24%. Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury note moved from 4.55% to 4.56%. Also this week, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June will be published, with a monthly decrease of 0.1% expected, while the core CPI, which excludes food and energy, is projected to rise 0.3%.

Finally, regarding commodities, movements were mixed on Friday. Gold fell 0.1% to close at USD 4,119.9 per ounce, while soybeans rose 1.4% to USD 439.6 per ton. In the energy market, oil closed with moderate losses: WTI fell 0.9% to USD 71.4 per barrel, and Brent dropped 0.4% to USD 76.0 per barrel.
