Major U.S. stock indices closed mixed yesterday, with the Nasdaq rising 0.5%

Major US stock indices closed with mixed results yesterday. The S&P 500 remained virtually unchanged, posting a year-to-date gain of 13.4%. The Nasdaq rose 0.5%, extending its annual gain to 17.2%. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones fell 0.4%, recording a cumulative rise of 7.9% for the year.

Regarding US Treasury yields, the short end of the curve saw a slight decline. The 1-year bond yield moved from 4.40% to 4.38%, while the 3-year bond remained virtually unchanged at 4.81%. The 10-year bond yield rose slightly, moving from 4.95% to 4.96%.

Finally, in the commodities market, gold rose 0.4% to $4,359.9 per ounce. Soybeans fell 0.2%, closing at $486.8 per tonne. As for oil, WTI dropped 1.2% to $94.6 per barrel, while Brent fell 1.7% to $98.6 per barrel.

Preliminary Purchasing Managers' Indices (PMI) for September were released this morning for the Eurozone and the United Kingdom. In the Eurozone, the services PMI stood at 53.0 points. This figure exceeded both the 51.4 points expected by analysts and the previous month's reading of 51.6 points. Meanwhile, the manufacturing PMI came in at 52.7 points—versus an analyst consensus of 52.6 points—aligning with the August figure. In the United Kingdom, the services PMI came in at 51.7 points, below the expected 52.0 points and the previous 52.5 points. However, the manufacturing PMI reached 52.0 points, surpassing the analyst consensus of 51.5 points and the August figure of 51.7 points. It is worth noting that readings above 50 points indicate an expansion in activity, while readings below that level signal contraction.
